“Şems-ül Maarif” is a great treasure of knowledge written by the great religious scholar and Islamic mystic Imam Ahmed bin Ali el Buni, who died approximately 800 years ago in 622. It would be more accurate to call it a “treasure” rather than a treasure.
Because the book was prepared based on the translations of the verses in the Holy Quran, the words of no language are sufficient to fully understand the meanings in the verses revealed by the infinite source of knowledge of God Almighty. The author Ahmed El Buni tried to explain the meanings of the verses he was trying to decipher as much as possible by adding his Sufi knowledge and thoughts, and he was quite successful.
There are two aspects to the messages of God Almighty: One is apparent, the other is hidden. This is why those who wanted to translate the Holy Quran into Turkish could not succeed and were content with only writing the translations of the verses. In other words, they could not translate the Holy Quran in its entirety, but could only interpret the verses.
Compared to the vocabulary of Almighty God, the words of the languages spoken in the world are not even a drop compared to an ocean. As a matter of fact, it is said that the vocabulary of Allah is "even if seven times more were added to all the seas to make ink and all the trees and plants were pens, it would still not be enough to write the number of the vocabulary of Almighty God."
Allah Almighty created only 28 letters for people to gain knowledge and revealed them to Prophet Adam (pbuh) for them to benefit from.
For each of these 28 letters, volumes of books have been written and the letters have been turned into a science. In short, these 28 letters, with their characteristics, occupy nearly a hundred pages of this book.
We had said for this book, not a Treasury of Knowledge, but a Treasury of Knowledge. Yes, this book is a treasure of knowledge. Because, while dealing with the subjects, the author has taken up and tried to explain their esoteric meaning, apart from their apparent aspects. A research based on human reason, imagination and logic has also revealed the existence of the possibility of thinking.
Especially in the subjects that mention the attributes of the beautiful names of Allah (swt), he touched upon such deep meanings and concepts that as a person thinks about the meanings put forward for each of those names and wanders around in his imagination, he goes deeper and then he understands that the source of knowledge and words of Almighty Allah is infinite. It is far beyond our mind and imagination, beyond our grasp.
For this reason, it is agreed that the Holy Quran is the absolute and absolute word of Allah. There can be no doubt about this. In addition to the apparent meanings of the verses, the esoteric thought carries such depth that the human mind and imagination can never reach it.
As I said above, our holy book, the Quran, cannot be translated for this reason. It can only be interpreted.
For all these reasons, it took me five months to translate this book, which was written based on the verses of the Holy Quran. Still, I doubt that I did justice to the book in this translation. There are several reasons for this:
Firstly; the author's knowledge is insufficient in comparison to the vocabulary of God Almighty, Secondly; the author is a profound Islamic mystic and scholar. In this respect, since the verses, which are the main subject of the book, are based on texts, he can more easily understand and write the meanings and concepts that these verses can indicate inwardly and include this in his book in the old language. Thirdly, this book was written 800 years ago in Arabic, which had a vocabulary of more than 30 thousand words at that time, so that even in their own language today many words have been removed from use and even from the dictionary.
Fourthly, while Arabic is a very rich language even today, our Turkish is very limited and inadequate, and most of the words have no equivalents.
Despite all these difficulties, I have tried to translate the book into Turkish in a language that everyone can read and understand. Despite this effort, I will of course have some shortcomings and flaws. I hope that my esteemed readers will tolerate these.
