Jane Austen (1775-1817): Despite her simple, secluded life of only forty-two years, she is a 19th century novelist who managed to become "the first great (and genuine) cult in the history of the novel" with her writings. As all "sales/reading" surveys, as well as countless TV and cinema adaptations, show, the author's second novel, Pride and Prejudice, published in 1813, is one of the most beloved novels of all time. This is probably due to Austen's "humor, wit and tenderness" in reflecting the tension between the "best future" role assigned to women by tradition in many parts of the world and women's right to choose their loves.
