The Alevi-Bektashi jokes, the first examples of which we identified in the 13th century, the period of the Anatolian enlightenment, essentially reflect the reaction of the Turkish people against the dominant government. In this work, the historical, political, social dimensions and connections of the jokes are examined in detail.
The study includes jokes that we have compiled from historical works, from Lemizade Abdullah Çelebi's Letâifname to Yörük and Tahtacı jokes.
Master writer İlhan Selçuk made the following observation regarding this study in 1992:
« The creativity of the Anatolian people, their free view of the universe, their worldview, their rebellion against bigotry became synonymous with the Bektashi; the Baba Erenler sprinkled the first rays of dawn on this land before the Enlightenment in the West; they planted, reaped, threshed, ground and kneaded, baked in the dough of humor.
The book you are holding in your hands has emerged as a result of the collaboration of a people symbolized by one person.
Rıza Zelyut, who compiled, organized and published Bektashi jokes, is doing a great job by presenting this collaboration to you.
In the darkness that surrounds society day by day, the light of Baba Erenler's cheerful humor
we need.
