Gogol, one of the founders of Russian realism, describes a schizophrenic trying to hold on to life in his Diary of a Madman, and the general structure of Russian society in his stories The Nose and the Overcoat, combining fantastical elements with his observational skills and subtle irony. Considered a source of inspiration for important Russian writers, Gogol wrote three plays during his lifetime and many of his works were adapted into plays after his death. Diary of a Madman, which was also staged in our country and had a great impact worldwide, is one of these. Gogol, who opened different windows to readers while realistically revealing the functioning of Russian bureaucracy, is perhaps best summarized by Dostoyevsky with the words We all emerged from Gogol’s ‘Overcoat’.
