Written over a period of thirty-two years, the Ince Memed Quartet is the story of Memed, who rebels against the system, and of Çukurova with its human relations, nature and colors. According to Yaşar Kemal, it is the novel of a person who was "born with the worm of rebellion inside him", a "forced man". Memed, who left banditry and settled in a Mediterranean town with Seyran, whom he married, forms a friendship with teacher Zeki Nejad, one of the heroes of the national struggle. Memed kills Şakir Bey, who had Zeki Nejad killed, who was fighting against the rice farmers who were oppressing the villagers, and goes back to the mountains. He kills Arif Saim Bey, a member of parliament who evacuated the villages and deported them to Çukurova in order to catch himself. After this incident, Ince Memed's identity becomes unclear. "In order to understand why the Turkish people changed a political power that had lasted a quarter of a century in 1950, I think it is enough to read Ince Memed 4, this novel written outside of official history." Fethi Naci, A Novelist: Yaşar Kemal "Ince Memed is both a Homeric poem, a medieval folk song, a proletarian epic or an adventure novel, and even a social document." Jacqueline Piatier, Le Monde, (France) "The fourth and final book of the Ince Memed series, published in 1987, is not only a Robin Hood-like adventure story, but also a tremendously poetic one." Regina Karachouli, Sachsische Zeitung, (Germany) "A wild, sad, and unforgettable epic of a rebellious young man who became a living legend in contemporary Türkiye." The Bookseller, (England)
